Who Should Paint You: Roy Lichtenstein

Larger than life, your personality overshadows everyone in the room
A painter would tend to portray you with a bit of added flair!
What Artist Should Paint Your Portrait?

I can't say I agree with the analysis of my personality (or at least, not in quite the way it's stated), but I certainly agree with the choice of artist.

Roy Liechtenstein makes Rob Liefeld seem like god.

I still like his art, and the two worked in entirely different styles for entirely different reasons, anyway.

Here's the context to my discmfort with Liechtenstein's work: I've seen a web page that juxtaposes each of his paintings with the pulp romance comic panel it was traced from. I see very little artistic addition in the process. Sure, he took images from the very gutters of popular culture and hung them up in galleries where the culture vultures could go shanfri-la-di-dah over them, but what makes that art, rather than just a clever ironic ploy? Serious question, I know you'll have a serious answer.

I like what the end result looks like, and don't really care who made it. I care who gets credit (because I would hate to be shafted in such a situation), but ultimately I'm enjoying the pictures on a purely aesthetic level, and on a purely aesthetic level Drowning Girl is a nice picture. Most people acknowledge Lichtenstein's methods, and he's been duely criticised, so it's not like he's getting credit where it isn't due. That's not all he did, anyway - he's best remembered for a period of work that occupied a couple of years of his life.

If we start arguing the point too much, it'll become a question of what exactly is art, anyway?

Granted, I don't like most of his other stuff I've seen (although the inverted house is cool). So go figure.
